  • Civic Plaza | Coaldale's Community Living Room

CIVIC PLAZA Coaldale's Community Living Room 2007 19 Street, Coaldale, Alberta The Town of Coaldale is making significant strides to enhance community life with the completion of Phase 3 of the Civic Square Project, revealing the much-anticipated Civic Plaza. This new addition to Coaldale’s central development is more than just a gathering space—it serves as "the community's living room," designed to bring residents together across all seasons. A Year-Round Community Hub At the heart of Civic Plaza is its adaptability and focus on fostering community engagement. The plaza has been thoughtfully designed to serve as a central hub for various activities, events, and casual gatherings throughout the year. In the warmer months, Civic Plaza will become an inviting space for residents to relax, socialize, or participate in public events such as markets, festivals, and outdoor performances. However, what truly makes Civic Plaza unique is its ability to transform with the seasons. Beneath the outdoor gathering area lies a network of refrigeration lines, allowing the plaza to convert into a picturesque outdoor ice rink during the winter months. This feature makes Civic Plaza a perfect destination for ice skating, a beloved winter pastime for many in Coaldale. Outdoor Ice Skating: A Winter Wonderland As temperatures drop, the refrigeration system will be activated, and Coaldale’s staff will begin the ice-making process. The cooled surface will create a smooth and durable ice sheet, ideal for public skating. Whether it’s a family outing, a romantic skate under the stars, or a holiday skate with Santa, Civic Plaza offers an enjoyable way for people of all ages to make the most of the colder months. This winter transformation adds a unique charm to downtown, encouraging residents to stay active and connected despite the chill in the air. Community First Approach Civic Plaza was designed with more than just aesthetics in mind; it reflects Coaldale’s dedication to creating spaces that bring people together. As "the community's living room," the plaza offers an inclusive environment with seating areas, green spaces, and pathways, welcoming people from all walks of life. The space was also designed to accommodate community groups and organizations, providing essential amenities such as a concession stand, restrooms, and a skate-lacing area, ensuring convenience for visitors during public events. Community groups interested in hosting at the plaza are encouraged to apply via the Civic Plaza Host application to take advantage of this versatile space. Future-Forward Development The completion of Civic Plaza is a milestone in the broader Civic Square project, which is being developed in phases to meet Coaldale’s growing needs. Phase 3 places a strong emphasis on communal spaces, and the plaza is expected to become a central gathering point for both residents and visitors. By creating a space that shifts in purpose from season to season, the Town of Coaldale is not only improving its downtown infrastructure but also enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. Whether you’re attending Summer Fest or lacing up your skates for some winter fun, Civic Plaza, as "the community's living room," is sure to become a cherished part of Coaldale’s cultural and social fabric. • Glow Skate | 2024 Winter Fest

GLOW SKATE POSTPONED An all-ages public skate with music and a lightshow on the outdoor skating rink at Civic Plaza . Important Safety Update: Glow Skate Postponed The safety of our community is our top priority. Due to stronger-than-expected Chinook winds combined with high temperatures, the ice surface at the Civic Plaza outdoor skating rink has been deemed unsafe for use. Although the ice remains frozen, the surface is soft and to avoid any potential injuries and to protect the ice from damage, the Civic Plaza outdoor rink will remain temporarily closed. As a result, Glow Skate has been postponed. We anticipate reopening the rink on the evening of Monday, December 9th at 5:30 p.m. when the Coaldale Figure Skating Club will host the concession as part of the Civic Plaza Winter Series . Join the Coaldale Figure Skating Club for hot chocolate, fires, and ice skating. Please note that while the ice plant is capable of maintaining skateable ice in temperatures as high as 10°C, temporary closures may be necessary during periods of warmer weather combined with strong winds. However, the ice plant will remain operational to preserve the ice's structure, and town staff will act promptly to restore the rink to full functionality. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we work to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. Stay tuned for updates! The Town of Coaldale Civic Plaza is located at 2007 19 St. See you on the ice next week!
